Moving checklist: what people forget (and what it costs)

Most people remember the movers, the lease, and the truck. What gets forgotten is the second tier — the things that don't seem urgent until they're a problem.

6–8 weeks out

• Order medical records and prescriptions to be transferable. You'll need new doctors in network — that takes weeks to confirm.
• Notify your kids' school in writing. Some districts need a transfer letter on file to release records.
• Pull a credit report so you have it for new utilities, leases, or mortgages. Frozen credit takes a day to thaw — at the worst time.

3–4 weeks out

• Schedule new utility starts BEFORE old utility shut-offs. Plan one day of overlap.
• Update your address with the IRS (Form 8822). Tax refunds get sent to the wrong place every year.
• Update voter registration. Easy to forget; harder to fix after an election deadline.
• Move-out cleaning — book early. Last-minute is double the price.

1–2 weeks out

• USPS mail forwarding. Set it to start the day you arrive, not the day you leave.
• Update your driver's license once you've arrived (timeline depends on state — usually 30–60 days).
• Re-add the new home to your auto and home/renters insurance. Sometimes the premium drops; sometimes it spikes.
• Confirm your moving insurance covers full replacement value. Most carriers default to 60 cents per pound, which is nothing.

After you arrive

• Walk through with photos for the security deposit. Day one, before unpacking.
• Forward any subscriptions to the new address (gym, magazines, recurring deliveries).
• Find your in-network PCP, dentist, and any specialists. Network status changes by zip code; the lookup tools lie.
