The retention department script: how to negotiate a lower internet bill
Internet and cable bills creep up every year. Here's the simple script and timing that actually gets retention to cut your bill.
Your provider's pricing has two tiers: the price they show new customers, and the higher price they quietly charge existing customers who never call. The fix is calling — but only if you ask for the right department in the right way.
Before you call
- Pull a recent bill. Note the plan, the current rate, and what you'd pay as a new customer (their site shows it).
- Check what competitors offer in your zip code. You'll mention them, casually, on the call.
- Block out 30 minutes. The actual call is shorter; the hold is the variable.
Ask for retention, not customer service
Customer service can't give you the discount. Retention can. Say: 'I'd like to cancel my service.' That routes you to retention immediately.
The script
When the retention agent picks up, be friendly, specific, and ready to leave. Something like:
Then stop talking. Let them offer. The first offer is rarely the best. A useful follow-up: 'That's a start — can you do better? I'd really like to stay.' Two-thirds of the time, they can.
What to accept
- A bill credit only counts if it's permanent. 'Three months at $20 off' is not the same as a new rate.
- A new promotional rate is fine — but ask when it ends and put the end date on your calendar to call again.
- If they offer a faster plan at the same price, that's only a win if you actually need the speed. Don't be upsold.
