How to cancel any subscription (even the ones that fight back)

A short field guide to actually getting a subscription cancelled — including the dark-pattern ones that hide the button, make you call, or 'pause' you instead.

The average household pays for around a dozen recurring services they don't actively use. The reason isn't laziness — it's design. Subscriptions are sold one-click and unsubscribed seven-step.

Here's the playbook for getting out, regardless of how the service is set up.

1. Find where you're actually paying

Open your last two months of card and bank statements. Skim for anything recurring. The names are often unfamiliar (the parent company, not the brand) — search the descriptor if you don't recognize it. Make a list with the amount, the date charged, and which card it's on.

2. Cancel in the source first

If you signed up through the App Store or Google Play, cancel there — not in the app itself. Apple and Google control the billing and cancelling on their end actually stops the charge. For everything else, log into the merchant's site and head to Account or Billing.

3. When the button is hidden

Common dark patterns and what works against them:

  • 'Pause' instead of cancel — paused subscriptions usually resume. Don't pause; cancel.
  • Phone-only cancellation — call during off-peak hours (mid-morning weekdays) and say one sentence: 'I'd like to cancel my membership effective today.' Repeat it. Don't engage with retention offers unless you actually want one.
  • Chat-only cancellation — ask for a written confirmation email before you close the chat window.
  • 'Are you sure?' loops — yes, you are sure. Click through every screen.

4. Verify it actually worked

Cancellation isn't done until you have two things: a written confirmation email AND no charge on your next statement. Diary it for one billing cycle later and check.

Don't want to do any of this? This is exactly what a Hollis assistant takes off your plate — including the call, the retention pitch, and the confirmation. We don't close the task until the charge stops.
